From February 2014, a chat transcript.
http://chattranscripts.blogspot.com/2014/02/openness-to-experience.html
I finished editing it because I was adding something to a web page, and notice the link was still awaiting completion.
http://sandradodd.com/open
There is the page on openness. I added something to the bottom, from a topic that's been stirred up at Radical Unschooling Info.
SO!! I feel guilty about not doing chats and am willing to start them up again in January, if there's enough interest. My favorite time is Wednesday at noon-at-my-house, partly because it's super easy to remember, middle of day middle of week. That's dinnertime/evening in Europe, 11:00 a.m. West Coast of north America, 2:00 East.
If there are regulars who can't make that time, please propose another time.
If there's interest, please try to stay for as much of the chat as possible. Part of my frustration was people coming in for half and hour and leaving, and all different half hours. We could do one hour instead of two, if that would help people be there.
If there's not enough interest, I could let the chat room go. Donations covered the cost for another year, so it's there until October 2016, when I might let it fade. Maybe facebook is fast enough to cover the desire for immediate feedback and we don't need a chatroom anymore!
Please write if you have opinions, either to me by e-mail or in comments at the blog. If you got this by e-mail, click the title and I think it will take you there. Thanks!

Chat hiatus continues
I just haven't gotten myself back in the mood.
I was sick for a few weeks, then Keith was incapacitated for a while, and when he was better, I got sick again. But it's not just that...
Turns out, I guess, I'm tired of chats. And I'm sorry to say so. But the two hours of the chat plus prep (however slight) and the clean-up (NOT slight, when it involves editing and coding and publishing a chat) takes longer than two hours.
Jill suggests maybe if there's a really good topic, maybe once a month would be good. The chat room is over $10 a month. Maybe that's okay. Maybe that much to "rent a room" isn't bad.
I think if it's not weekly and regular, people will forget. But rather than having a small regular crowd, it might be better to get good topics and advertise widely. I'll think. Input is welcome.
It seems to me to be a better use of time (more satisfying to me, and useful to a greater number of people) for me to work on my webpage, and on Just Add Light and Stir, and to respond on discussions.
Every week (or more often) I discover a web page I started and never finished or announced. This "deprivation" page is an example.
http://aboutunschooling.blogspot.com
Here's another unfinished page:
http://sandradodd.com/barrage
It is partly, and will (maybe someday) be more links to things from 1994, 1995, that we used to send out on AOL. Here's a transcript of a chat from 1995. Twenty years. I know I missed a few years, but there were weeks with two or three chats a week, too. That's a lot of years.
http://sandradodd.com/chats/detox
So there's some excuses for me and some reading for you! Have fun. :-)

Sick day, sorry
I'm too sick to think about a chat this week.
I went back to urgent care after five days of up and down, changing symptoms.
They x-rayed me and gave me four new and different meds (said scrap the Plan A antibiotics).
I'm not recovering quickly or easily.
If people want to go into the chatroom without me, that's no problem, anytime!

August 12, chat about Water
Wednesday's chat will be about this page I'm working on, about water.
http://sandradodd.com/water
It's not about water itself, but about effects of, uses of, magic of, unschooling-views-of water. Water in an unschooling life.

I don't feel good about such small, general chats, and I really don't have the energy to do topic chats.
Thanks for those who've been coming, but I think I'd rather everyone put energy into either Always Learning or Radical Unschooling Info. More people will benefit.
If you're in one of those discussions and things seem too quiet for you, tell a story or bring up something that others can comment on. Maybe Wednesdays, at least, you could remember to put some questions or comments at one of those places.
So no chats for the next five weeks, at least. Vacation until the second week or August, or maybe longer.
Thanks!

July 1, I'll be in the chatroom at the regular time
I'm tired of the work of special topics, but if you want to shoot the breeze (or discuss something important) with a few unschoolers, come on. 9:30 my time (Albuquerque), so do what you need to do to find the time at your house.

An antique chat transcript
Ideal Homeschooling Moment, from 1996. I've put up a chat that came up in files saved on my computer.
No live chat this week, so tide yourselves over with that, or something. Or feel free to chat without me—I'm having a great vacation, and will be spending Wednesday with a six year old girl, because Kirby and Destiny (who are living with me and Keith for a while) have jobs beginning probably on Tuesday.
Also, on Wednesday, Holly will be starting a new job 250 miles from her recent job. She's moving from Socorro, New Mexico to Chama, New Mexico (where my sister lives) for the summer, at least, and will be working here: High Country Restaurant and Saloon.

My chat hiatus continues! I don't want to do chats for a while. Please read here, instead:
Just Add Light and Stir
Thinking Sticks: Playing with Ideas
Or listen to some of Amy Childs' quarter-hour shows about unschooling. Lots have me in there, somewhere. The Unschooling Life Podcast
The chatroom is there, so if anyone feels like showing up, or inviting friends (any time) to use that room, please do

Deschooling ideas (clever new ones!), April 1
Please bring a NEW deschooling question (your own, or one you've heard), and a different sort of unschooling idea than the regular ones we repeat all the time. Let's mix it up.
What can a family do to begin to recover from school, and what can someone do when after a few years a school-thought or fear jumps up and shakes the family?

Seeing Unschooling More Clearly, March 18
Read this, please, before the chat: http://sandradodd.com/seeingit
The chat will be about a plateau reached after deschooling, in which a parent moves from looking for schoolish things to perceiving the same world in a new way.

March 4 chat on Spirituality
Sometimes it seems that the changes people make as they deschool and then become competent, confident unschoolers tend toward enlightenment of one sort and another.
It's a little embarrassing for me to even propose the topic, yet I think it's very true that profound changes in a person's awareness and perspective ARE in the realm of the spirit.
There's this, to think about, but please bring stories and ideas. http://sandradodd.com/spirituality

February 18, Collections
Collections—hobbies that involve collections, or something like that! Kids' collections, parents' collections, inherited collections or those of friends, or museums.... What's with collecting? What's it good for?
If you have a minute, maybe think back or look around for collections of things in history, or other places.
If there were to be a link, I suppose Focus, Hobbies and Obsessions. There was a chat on that (the page from The Big Book) on January 31, 2013

Topics chat, February 4 (idea-getting)
It would be good to decide some chat topics in advance. Also I'm considering a place for more serious topics in some other forum and would like advice and ideas for where, and what to call it.
And if people have current questions, we'll have time for that, too.
Thanks!

Little bits January 14 chat
Little bits make big.... bits.
Think of or dig up a saying/adage/dicho/proverb that suggests lots of little somethings making up a big thing. Whether they're negative or positive, let's play with that idea. Something about growth or perspective, or it might be about packrattery or barnacles on a boat
