June 30th's chat will be the last for a few months. I'm getting busy with birthdays, conferences, travel and a wedding. Late October is the first chance I'll have to consider re-instating a routine.
If others want to use the room, it's there and paid for—if you want to organize something without me, I don't mind!

Spiritual/Existential Intelligence, June 30, 2016
Here we turn philosophical, and depart from Howard Gardner's approved set.
I've lifted this list from a wikipedia article for you, as I was so struck by its similarity to the fabric of unschooling discussions over the years:
I've lifted this list from a wikipedia article for you, as I was so struck by its similarity to the fabric of unschooling discussions over the years:
Definitions of spiritual intelligence rely on the concept of spirituality as being distinct from religiosity.
Danah Zohar defined 12 principles underlying spiritual intelligence:
Self-awareness: Knowing what I believe in and value, and what deeply motivates me.
Spontaneity: Living in and being responsive to the moment.
Being vision- and value-led: Acting from principles and deep beliefs, and living accordingly.
Holism: Seeing larger patterns, relationships, and connections; having a sense of belonging.
Compassion: Having the quality of "feeling-with" and deep empathy.
Celebration of diversity: Valuing other people for their differences, not despite them.
Field independence: Standing against the crowd and having one's own convictions.
Humility: Having the sense of being a player in a larger drama, of one's true place in the world.
Tendency to ask fundamental "Why?" questions: Needing to understand things and get to the bottom of them.
Ability to reframe: Standing back from a situation or problem and seeing the bigger picture or wider context.
Positive use of adversity: Learning and growing from mistakes, setbacks, and suffering.
Sense of vocation: Feeling called upon to serve, to give something back.

Nature Intelligence
(The word "naturalistic" is bothering me this week.)
It's not about "nature" meaning trees and bugs, though it is that, too.
It's about the nature of things—categorization, distinguishing minor differences, identifying and sorting.

Bodily/kinesthetic intelligence, June 16, 2016
Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence covers dance, body-awareness, physical talents that might be used for sports or knot-tying or wood carving or physical therapy. Some people are only slightly aware of how their bodies work and what their capacities are. Some people seem to be born knowing, or using their bodies well without even thinking about it.

Intrapersonal intelligence—Self-awareness, June 9, 2016
Intrapersonal intelligence might be the least discussed of all of these, in normal life. Maybe anywhere.
Google gave me a description:
Here's my own, from my site, which requires the one above it to make sense.

Google gave me a description:
The word intrapersonal means “within the self”—so, “intrapersonal intelligence” is another term for self-awareness or introspection. It's part of psychologist Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. People who have high intrapersonal intelligence are aware of their emotions, motivations, beliefs, and goals.
It came from ConnectionsAcademy.com, and it's a nice definition.
Here's my own, from my site, which requires the one above it to make sense.
Interpersonal intelligence is about understanding other people—their non-verbal expressions, their motivations and desires and moods.
Intrapersonal intelligence is understanding one's self in those ways. How are you feeling and why? What are your capabilities and problems and fears and what will help you move toward goals?

Interpersonal Intelligence, June 2
Interpersonal intelligence is about understanding other people—their non-verbal expressions, their motivations and desires and moods. In school, this is used by some kids to play to the teachers's preferences and prejudices (or just to play the teachers). When I was a kid, the only bad grades I got were in conduct or deportment. I was off exercising my interpersonal intelligence, but it was not on the curriculum, so it was "being bad."
In the world outside of school, it can be the best part of some kids lives! So how can we appreciate and accommodate it?

The second most schoolish intelligence is mathematical/logical (in school's order of priority, I think).
Please come to the chat and share some of your DEschooling epiphanies about what is logical or mathematical that was never touched on in school, and maybe some stories of cool discoveries your kids have made.

Verbal/linguistic intelligence
Verbal/linguistic intelligence is the easiest of these to consider, because most people use language, or understand it. Some people do it exceptionally well, or learn additional languages easily. In a way, it's a hard thing to appreciate, because most people use language, and can put some words down on paper, and so some don't appreciate the range of ease or facility.
For unschoolers this one can cause stumbles, because it's so... SCHOOLY. :-)
So think outside any box you're used to, if you can, and consider how this intelligence shows itself in your family, and in the world around you.
Here is something short and painless, about similarities and differences in a few pop culture words in three languages. (Two or more of these people speak English; they probably all speak Korean. "Big Bang" is a Korean boy band.)
"Sofa" is not an English word, though. :-) It's from Turkish, and Arabic before that, probably picked up by Christian Crusaders in the Middle Ages (not the upholstered furniture, but the term for it, when they DID start upholstering benches in western Europe, later). Word trivia is fun for some people, and not for other people, because.... various reasons. Think about your own.

Musical Intelligence, May 12
This week's chat is part two in the set of Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences theory. Musical Intelligence! How can unschooling parents nourish and expand their children's lives to include opportunities for them to explore and exercise that part of them?
What is it like, this "musical intelligence"? What does it connect to?

April 28, Spouse/Partner
Thursday, April 28, 2016
Spouse or partner, peace at home, support, acceptance, avoiding negativity—whatever topics people bring. Preserving goo relationships with a significant other.
Some resources:
Spouses—Unschooling can make us better partners!
That has links at the bottom to:
Controlling one's spouse [about not trying to do that]
If you're considering separation...
Divorce (Avoidance of, for Unschoolers)
"If you are choosing to be a mother, move beyond playing at it, and *be* it.
That's from Pam Laricchia, at this page: Are You Playing the Role of “Mother”?
I would like to suggest that people read that and consider not "playing the role of partner" in an adult relationship, but BEING a partner.
And there is a facebook group called Something Sweet for our Significant Other
But if you don't have time to read, come to the chat anyway.

Something about April 14
I will be in and out of the chat. I'll try to be in. :-)
In planning the week, I didn't think of the chat when Holly invited us up to Española to see where she's living and to have lunch. She doesn't have wifi and has used up all our high speed for the month. I'll request a wifi-enabled place for our lunch, and see if I can use my phone otherwise, as a hotspot.
Please come to the chat and help others figure out how to make imaginary friends work in their favor!

Chat Reminder! Thursday.
Thursday, April 15. Let's talk about having a witness, real or imagined, to help you remember to be patient and sweet (or whatever you need reminders about). I have a new page with notes on that. I can add a link to the transcript later, if you all tell good stories that will help future unschoolers!

"An abundance of beauty," March 31
March 31 is my wedding anniversary, but I'll do a chat anyway, so be nice to me!
I get to pick the topic, then. Art, as described in this Just Add Light post:
http://justaddlightandstir.blogspot.com/2010/09/abundance-of-beauty.html
I think times will change again for some people, if Europe has initiated clock-change season. Back to the way it was last month, I'm pretty sure. Please put a reminder on your phone or computer, because I might forget to send another e-mail.

TIME CHANGE and Strewing
It's daylight savings time at my house (and north America's houses, as applicable).
Anyone who lives where daylight savings time doesn't happen, or in Europe where it will happen in two weeks, please double-check your times. I think this is the deal for two weeks:
11:00 am Pacific
noon Mountain time
1:00 pm Central
2:00 pm Eastern
6:00 pm Lisbon/UK
7:00 pm Leiden
